GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS

Contrast media is a substance that is introduced into or around a structure or tissues to produce the visualization of organs and certain tissues under the absorption of x-rays. In diagnostic radiology the purpose is to detect and to treat certain diseases. Nonionizing radiations of infrared, gamma rays, ultrasound waves, and magnetic fields are also used for diagnosis. MRI contrast agents work by altering the magnetic properties of hydrogen nucleus not by radioopaque. Barium sulfate class contrast agents are used in the digestive tract. Organic iodine contrast agents are water soluble and less harmful to the body, and thus can be used almost anywhere in the body. Examples of contrast medium used in diagnostic radiology include;
